Cosenza is one of the most populous provinces in Italy. It has a population of 732,615 according to the 2005 Istat (the Italian national institute of statistics) data, 20,000 more than the provinces of Catanzaro, Crotone and Vibo Valentia together.

The area of the Province of Cosenza covers 44.1% of the Calabrian surface (6,650 km²) and it has a population density of about 110 people for every square kilometre.

The territory of the province, which features mostly mountains and hills, is divided into 155 Municipalities.

Cosenza is the eight largest Province in Italy and it has 228 km of coastline.
